BBQ with gas from the onboard LPG system

If your camper already has a permanently installed LPG system, there is no need to carry an additional gas cylinder specifically for your outdoor BBQ and set it up separately every time. The Roam gas outlet provides a permanent connection on the vehicle exterior, allowing a suitable external gas appliance to be supplied from the existing regulated low-pressure gas system.

This is particularly convenient for gas BBQs, outdoor cookers and other portable LPG appliances designed to operate from an already regulated 30 mbar gas supply. After cooking, simply disconnect the hose and close the weatherproof cover.

For current European camper installations: 30 mbar

Current LPG systems in motorhomes, campervans and caravans are designed for a uniform operating pressure of 30 mbar. The Roam gas outlet is therefore installed downstream of the pressure regulator on the low-pressure side of the vehicle's LPG system.

The coupling valve combines a safety quick-release coupling according to DIN 4815-5 with a ball valve according to EN 331. The outlet itself is marked with a nominal connection pressure of 30 mbar and as an LPG outlet only.

Not every gas BBQ can be connected

There is an important difference compared with connecting a BBQ directly to a gas cylinder: the Roam gas outlet already supplies regulated gas at 30 mbar. The connected appliance must therefore be specifically suitable for this operating pressure and for use with an already regulated low-pressure supply.

Safety coupling and ball valve

At the heart of the gas outlet is a GOK SKU SSV-K coupling valve, combining a shut-off valve and quick-release coupling in a single unit.

The ball valve has only fully open and fully closed positions. Its design prevents gas flow from being enabled unless a suitable hose assembly is correctly connected. This means the gas supply cannot accidentally be opened simply by operating the valve when no appliance is attached.

The tamper-resistant quick-release coupling is designed for use with a suitable STN plug nipple and allows an appropriate outdoor appliance to be connected and disconnected quickly.

Designed for permanent exterior installation

Like the other connections in the Scanstrut Roam Series, the gas outlet is designed for installation on the exterior wall of a recreational vehicle. With the cover fully closed, the front achieves IP68 and IP69K protection.

The cover is spring-loaded and features a 90° stay-open position. Screws and other mechanically stressed components are made from corrosion-resistant 316 marine-grade stainless steel. A supplied foam gasket seals the housing against the mounting surface.

The specified IP rating applies only when the outlet is correctly installed on a flat, smooth and non-porous surface and the cover is fully closed.

Connection to the permanent LPG installation

At the rear, the valve is connected via an M14 × 1.5 mm compression fitting to copper pipe with an outside diameter of 8 mm. Only corresponding 8 mm copper pipe may be used with the supplied connection components.

A central installation opening with a diameter of 95 mm is required. The installation location must be chosen so that any escaping LPG can safely disperse outside the vehicle and adequate ventilation is available. Areas subject to strong heat radiation, poor ventilation or possible flooding are unsuitable. The gas outlet must also not be installed in ignition-risk areas such as the engine compartment.

Installation and LPG inspection in Germany

The gas outlet becomes part of the vehicle's permanently installed LPG system. Its integration is therefore subject to the requirements applicable to the vehicle's gas installation. In new installations, the complete system must comply with DIN EN 1949.

The SC-R-G1 must be installed by appropriately qualified personnel. After installation, all connections must be checked for gas tightness.

In Germany, an LPG inspection is also mandatory: before an LPG system is put into service for the first time, and after any modification requiring inspection, the system must be inspected by an authorised qualified inspector before it is put or returned into service. The inspection must then be repeated every 24 months.

If a Roam gas outlet is retrofitted to an existing onboard LPG system, the modified system should therefore not simply be used again without the required subsequent inspection.
