Fuel filter to protect the pump and auxiliary heater
We recommend installing a fuel filter in front of the fuel pump in every auxiliary heater installation. Especially when traveling in countries with unknown fuel quality, this small part protects the heater and ensures reliable operation.
The filter has stepped hose connections and fits the fuel hose pieces that come with the Autoterm auxiliary heater kit for connecting to the rigid fuel line. We also carry the fuel hose itself under item number 35612, in case the pieces are not enough (tip: cut the pieces in half and you will have enough parts. The lengths are then still sufficient to sit properly on the nozzles and be secured with clamps).
Note: The stepped nozzle on the fuel filter has diameters of 6 and 8 mm - the fuel hose with a 5 mm inner diameter will still slide on and then sits (intentionally) tightly. If it resists, wet the parts with a little fuel and it will slide on more easily.
The fuel pump itself contains tiny bypasses. If these become clogged, it affects the delivery rate of the pump and thus the combustion of the heater, which in turn can mean reduced heating output or even a failure of the heater. The filter therefore prevents dirt from ending up in the fuel pump.
Correct installation of the filter
To ensure the filter works correctly, it is important to install it properly.
First, make sure the flow direction of the diesel through the filter is correct. Diesel always flows from the tank to the heater. The arrow on the filter must always point toward the heater.
Since filters are difficult to bleed, also make sure that the filter outlet pointing toward the pump/heater tilts slightly downward. This keeps the filter outlet always covered with diesel and no air bubbles can end up in the pump, which could in turn cause problems.
According to the heater's installation manual, after bleeding (see heater manual p. 20) the pump must be installed with the outlet to the heater pointing upward.
As a result, the filter and the heater pump cannot be placed too close to each other.
We recommend placing the filter as close as possible to the tank and the pump about 70 cm away from it.
