Why is a 100W USB-C charging socket special in a 12V system?

Modern laptops and fast chargers operate at voltages of up to 20V. A conventional 12V onboard system cannot provide this voltage directly.

Standard USB sockets typically supply 5V or 9V – which is not sufficient for high-power devices. The result in a camper: inverter, power supply unit, and additional energy losses.

The convertiger 100 solves this problem directly within the DC system: the integrated buck-boost converter increases the onboard voltage from 12V up to 20V when required.

This means for you:

• Direct charging of 100W USB-C laptops in your camper
• Higher efficiency (no conversion losses) compared to using an inverter
• No inverter standby consumption
• Reduced installation effort in the vehicle
   

No disturbing light in the camper

The charging voltage is displayed for 20 seconds after plugging in. The display then switches off automatically, followed by the backlight after another 10 seconds.

Good to know:

These factors may result in reduced charging performance:

• No corresponding power demand from the connected device
• State of charge of the device
• USB-C cable quality (5A e-marked cable required; )
• Input voltage too low
• Ambient temperature too high

Cable recommendation:

For full charging performance, use a USB-C to USB-C cable that meets the following criteria:

USB-PD certified, rated for 5 A / 100 W.
As short as possible (ideally under 1 m) and of adequate gauge — cables that are too long or too thin cause voltage drop and can interfere with power negotiation

The following cable types may cause compatibility issues due to highly inconsistent implementations across the market:

• Magnetic charging adapters and proprietary charging cables (e.g. Apple MagSafe) — not all USB-C pins are carried through the magnetic interface, so the power negotiation is emulated by electronics inside the cable, which in some cases deviates from the USB-PD specification
• Charging cables with a built-in fixed voltage trigger (e.g. in some Starlink setups), which deliver a fixed 20 V to the device instead of negotiating normally

Such cables may work, but are not guaranteed to. If you experience issues, please test with a standard USB-C cable first.
