Scanstrut Roam 125 V / 30 A AC Power Inlet

The Scanstrut Roam 125 V / 30 A AC Power Inlet is a robust, weatherproof shore power inlet for recreational vehicles with a North American 120/125 V AC electrical system. The connection is rated for 30 A at 60 Hz and uses a locking NEMA L5-30 connection on the vehicle side.

Thanks to its shallow installation depth, flexible cable routing and high level of weather protection, it is particularly suitable for professional camper conversions where space behind the exterior wall is limited. Components made from 316 marine-grade stainless steel, nickel-plated brass contacts and the spring-loaded cover are designed for long-term outdoor use.

125 V in a European-built camper – when does it make sense?

For a conventional camper conversion intended for the German or European market, this shore power inlet is generally not the appropriate choice. European vehicles normally use an external shore power system designed for the 230 V mains supply.

The 125 V version becomes relevant for vehicle builders in Europe who manufacture recreational vehicles for the North American market, convert imported US or Canadian vehicles, or build vehicles specifically for extended travel in regions using North American electrical infrastructure.

A dedicated 120/125 V shore power inlet can also make sense on an internationally designed expedition vehicle. In this case, however, the electrical system behind the inlet must have been designed from the outset to accommodate different mains voltages.

The 125 V rating describes the nominal rating of the inlet. North American RV parks and shore power systems are generally referred to as 120 V AC systems in normal operation. The Scanstrut inlet is designed for this type of supply with a rating of 125 V AC, 30 A and 60 Hz.

Important: 125 V is not a replacement for 230 V

The Scanstrut Roam SC-R-P2 is a shore power inlet – not a voltage converter.

It must therefore not simply be connected to an existing European 230 V installation. When the inlet is connected to a North American shore power supply, the system downstream will still receive approximately 120 V at 60 Hz – not 230 V.

The vehicle's 12 V electrical system is also not connected directly to this inlet. Just as in a European camper, shore power is connected to the 12 V battery system via a suitable AC-DC battery charger or another appropriately designed power system.

A battery charger with a wide AC input voltage range may, for example, operate from both European and North American mains supplies. However, this does not automatically mean that an existing 230 V socket and appliance circuit can also be operated from 120 V. If a vehicle is intended to support both mains systems, the complete AC architecture – including protection, switching and, where required, voltage conversion equipment – must be designed accordingly.

Work on the vehicle's AC electrical system must be carried out professionally and in accordance with the regulations applicable to the vehicle and its intended market.

Designed for robust exterior installations

The shore power inlet is installed in an exposed position on the outside of the vehicle. Rain, dust, UV exposure, dirt and regular vehicle washing are part of everyday use. With the cover fully closed, the front of the Roam Power Inlet therefore achieves IP68 and IP69K protection. When connected, it provides IP44 protection.

The mechanically stressed components are made from corrosion-resistant 316 marine-grade stainless steel. Nickel-plated brass screw terminals are used for the electrical contacts. The cover is fully spring-loaded and includes a 90° stay-open position, keeping it open while the shore power cable is connected.

The inlet is compatible with NEMA L5-30R connections as well as suitable Marinco, Hubbell and Mennekes connectors. Standard locking rings and common quick-lock rings can also be used.

Only 77 mm installation depth

With an installation depth of just 77 mm, the Roam shore power inlet is also suitable for exterior walls and installation areas where only limited space is available behind the mounting surface.

The rotatable rear cover provides additional flexibility. It can be installed in three positions, allowing the cable to exit downwards, to the left or to the right of the housing. In each configuration, the cable exits at a fixed 90° angle.

An integrated strain relief secures the cable inside the housing. The inlet is suitable for both round and flat cables. An integrated stripping guide on the housing helps prepare the conductors correctly.

Electrical connection

The SC-R-P2 uses a NEMA L5-30P connection and is designed for use with a matching NEMA L5-30R connector. Scanstrut specifies flexible, multi-stranded 10 AWG triplex cable for the internal wiring.

This makes the inlet particularly suitable as the vehicle-side connection of a system specifically designed for 120/125 V shore power. The components installed downstream depend on the individual vehicle concept – for example the battery charger, power system, AC distribution and intended appliances.

Installation note

The shore power inlet forms part of the vehicle's AC installation. The downstream protection, charging, distribution and, where required, voltage conversion equipment must be selected and designed to suit the mains voltage, frequency, maximum current and overall electrical system concept.

For a vehicle intended for the European market, the SC-R-P2 must therefore not simply be used in place of a 230 V shore power inlet. For vehicles with a North American electrical system or a deliberately multi-voltage design, however, it provides a robust and space-saving exterior connection.
