Description

Autoterm Air 2D diesel air heater with altitude kit

Proven heating technology for campers, off-road vehicles, boats and more.

Key benefits at a glance

  • Popular diesel air heater for campers, motorhomes, boats and expedition vehicles
  • Robust, reliable and safe with low fuel and power consumption
  • Compact design and various control panels for flexible installation options
  • E-mark certified: can be installed without registration or TÜV inspection
  • No loss of warranty when installed by yourself
  • Altitude kit included as standard for reliable operation at high altitude

The Autoterm Air 2D, formerly known as the Planar 2D, is one of the most popular diesel air heaters for campers, motorhomes, boats and expedition vehicles. Robust, reliable and safe – with extremely low fuel and power consumption – it is perfect for anyone who relies on dependable heat while travelling.
Manufactured in Latvia, it is fully “Made in Europe”.

High quality, high flexibility and perfect for self-installation

Thanks to its compact design and various control panels, the Autoterm Air 2D is suitable for almost any travel vehicle – from panel vans to expedition trucks. It is also used on the water.

Thanks to its E-mark certification, it can be installed without registration – without TÜV inspection and without loss of warranty when self-installed. Of course, if needed, our experienced installation partners can also take care of this for you.

It is available in 12V for most campers and transporters, and in 24V for onboard electrical systems typically used in truck-based motorhomes – simply choose the correct version.

Now even more flexible to install: choose the shape of the hot air outlet

The heater is available with two different hot air outlets for different installation situations and space constraints, which you can select above accordingly.

1. With straight outlet: Please note that the hot air must be routed away from the heater in as straight a line as possible. The warm air duct should ideally only have gentle bends and must not make a 90° turn or similar sharp curve directly behind the heater. Otherwise, heat will build up inside the heater and it will shut down for safety reasons.

2. With 90° elbow: Here, the hot air is routed out of the heater through a specially flow-optimised 90° elbow. The outlet can be mounted facing upwards or sideways. Especially with this version, it is important to create a straight duct run from the heater outlet onwards. The maximum duct length should not exceed 3–4 m.

Important: Even though the heaters themselves are identical: if you use warm air ducting with the straight version in order to “build” an angled outlet, your heater will overheat. So please plan your installation before ordering, so that you know straight away which version makes sense for your build.

Altitude kit included as standard – ready for every adventure

Whether in Nepal or the Andes: the Air 2D is equipped with an altitude kit that automatically adjusts combustion to air pressure. This means it operates reliably even at high altitude.

Our customer Fabian (“Tornado on Tour”) successfully operated his Air 2D in a T3 bus in Chile at 5032 m – you can find a short impression here on YouTube.

Still important:
At high altitude, the oxygen level drops – and with it the heater’s maximum output. A good rule of thumb is: from around 2000 m upwards, the heater loses about 5% of its output for every additional 500 metres of altitude.

The higher you travel, the more sensitive the heater becomes to resistance in the airflow. Therefore, use the shortest and simplest possible air routing and avoid elbows and kinks. For extreme conditions, the ducting can also be temporarily removed.

Maintenance: do not forget the burn-off cycle
Like any diesel engine, a diesel air heater must regularly reach full temperature to prevent deposits from building up. You should therefore let it run at full power for about an hour from time to time – especially after prolonged use at low output.

Easy to repair

Autoterm heaters are built for continuous operation and are very robust.
But if something does go wrong, we are an official Autoterm distributor with spare parts and a workshop in Germany, ready to help.

This is especially important for long-term travellers and overlanders: the heater is deliberately designed so that many repairs can also be carried out on the road. Our support team will help you whenever needed.

Controls and operating panels

A control panel is included with the heater (please select your preferred version above). You currently have the choice between the following options:

Comfort Control

Control panel with multifunction rotary knob and display: simple operation, timer function, voltage display and thermostat mode – the proven all-rounder, also featuring a burn-off reminder and voltage monitoring that can actively shut the heater down to protect the battery.

Comfort Control panel
Touch Control

Modern touch control panel with a clear menu structure. Ideal if you value especially convenient and intuitive operation and like to keep your information clearly visible.

Touch Control panel
Mini Control

The Mini Control is a simple control panel for operating the heater via output levels. Using temperature mode with this control panel requires an optional external temperature sensor.

Mini Control panel
Push Control (optional)

Since 2025, two control units can be operated simultaneously on one heater – for example, one in the living area and one in the cab or sleeping area.
The Push Control panel is a compact, robust push-button controller for quick day-to-day operation (on/off and output levels). It can be combined with the Comfort Control or used on its own if only minimal operation is required.

  • Depth: 12 cm
  • Weight: 2.86 kg (without accessories)

Optional: accessories & installation kits

For a clean installation, we recommend a stainless steel mounting flange for thermal decoupling. Warm air ducting, distributors and outlets can be found in the accessories section – or you can go straight for one of our installation kits.

Our classic: the 99% Camper Kit – suitable for most conversions.

For a combination of heating and hot water: the Warmduscher Kit.

Not sure whether the heating output is enough?

In most campers, the 2 kW heating output is completely sufficient. The larger Air 4D with 4 kW is often oversized for smaller vehicles.

Our tip: it is better to run the smaller heater at a higher setting regularly than to run a larger one permanently at minimum output. This ensures cleaner combustion and a longer service life.
